Why in Wroclaw ?John Paul II, in deciding that the 46th International Eucharistic Congress should take place in Wroclaw, was entrusting a particularly important and responsible task to the Church of Poland, and especially to the Archdiocese of Wroclaw. The International Eucharistic Congress can boast of a long history, going back for more than a century. It is being held for the first time in Poland at a time when Central East Europe is freeing itself from the heritage of Marxist ideology and finding its way towards freedom. The aim of the Congress is, above all, to spread ever more widely a fuller understanding and worship of Jesus Christ present in the Eucharistic Mystery, and to express our gratitude to God for remaining with us in the Blessed Sacrament. This will also be strongly linked with an ecumenical prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of freedom that Europe has received during these last years, and with prayers to Christ, that the peoples of this part of the continent may learn how to be truly free.The aims of the Congress involved for the organizers of the Congress, are immense. During the last years, the Church in Poland and the city of Wroclaw itself, have acquired a considerable experience of organizing important religious ceremonies: meetings with the Holy Father during his pilgrimages to the Motherland, especially his meeting with people in the Partynice area of Wroclaw; the Eucharistic Congress of Poland, two international youth meetings, again in Wroclaw, under the auspices of the Taizé Community. These experiences provide a valuable basis for the organization of the Eucharistic Congress an well as an introduction for our Archdiocese to the forthcoming celebration of its own millennium.
